Haga Park Museum

Old museum hosts a new exhibition

Spring 2003 saw the National Property Board re-open the Haga Park Museum with a completely new exhibition about the park and its buildings. As well as being Sweden's foremost "English park", Haga Park is also a national monument and part of Stockholm's and Solna's National City Park.

The exhibition also describes the administrative role of the National Property Board with responsibility for the park's land and buildings.

Sultan's tents

The copper tents were built in 1787-90 and designed by Louis Jean Desprez. He proposed that all the façades of the buildings should be designed as tents, clad in decoratively painted copper plate. However, tent façades were only built on the side facing the main lawns, which still gives the desired illusion of a sultan's encampment on the edge of the forest.

Fire

The middle tent was destroyed completely by fire in 1953. The front of the tent was rebuilt in 1962-64 under the leadership of palace architect Ragnar Hjorth. 1977-78 saw the buildings behind the tent façades rebuilt, following plans by palace architect Torbjörn Olsson. This turned the stableyard, formerly open, into a tent room with a ceiling.

Three tents with different contents

Today the middle copper tent is home to the Haga Park Museum. The tent to the east houses a restaurant and the one on the western side is accommodation. The copper tents are a national monument.
